On this day 250 years ago in the Revolution — October 8, 1776

On this day 250 years ago near Fort Washington on Manhattan Island, Philip Vickers Fithian died of dysentery while serving as the chaplain of a New Jersey militia regiment attached to the Continental Army. The observations in Fithian’s diary are an often cited source for life in America in the years immediately preceding the Revolution and during the opening year of the Revolutionary War.
