On this day 250 years ago at German Flatts, New York, Maj. Gen. Philip Schuyler convened a multi-day conference with 1718 members (men, women and children) of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy (often referred to as Iroquois Indians). In his welcoming remarks Schuyler said the Americans “mean to live in friendship, and cultivate a good understanding, and maintain a friendly intercourse with all Indians.” The purpose of the conference was to persuade the Iroquois to maintain neutrality in the War and to reject British requests for warriors to join their campaigns against the Americans.
