On this day 250 years ago, Francis Salvador was leading a group of South Carolina militiamen to attack an encampment of Loyalists and Cherokees on the Keowee River in South Carolina. The Cherokees and Loyalists, however, ambushed the Patriots as they approached the encampment. During the fight, Salvador was wounded and scalped by Cherokees. He died of his wounds early in the morning of August 2. Salvador was the first Jew to die fighting for the Patriots in America.
