On this day 250 years ago in the Revolution — June 21, 1776

On this day 250 years ago in Burlington, the Provincial Congress of New Jersey declared Governor William Franklin to be “a virulent enemy to this country, and a person that may prove dangerous.” Although he was the son of Patriot leader Benjamin Franklin who represented Pennsylvania in the Continental Congress, the New Jersey Provincial Congress placed Governor Franklin under arrest, and referred his case to the Continental Congress to determine whether he should be imprisoned.

On this day 250 years ago, Captain Robert Adams, Ensign Joseph Culbertson and two privates were killed and Captain William Rippey and Ensign Lusk were captured by Indian allies of the British at Isle Aux Noix, Quebec Province, Canada. Rippey and Lusk were subsequently freed when other soldiers from Col. Irvine’s Pennsylvania regiment came to their rescue. History records well the names of officers killed in the prominent battles of the Revolution, but the men killed in small skirmishes and the even greater number of men who died from disease in the Revolution usually can be identified only from obscure scores. And the deaths of enlisted men were unfortunately recorded all too often simply as numbers. We should remember the sacrifice of Captain Adams, Ensign Culbertson and the two unnamed privates 250 years ago today at Isle Aux Noix. And we should remember the other men, and women, who gave their lives for American Liberty elsewhere 250 years ago today, and every other day of the Revolution, whether or not their names have been recorded by history.
