On this day 250 years ago in the Revolution — June 13, 1776

On this day 250 years ago at Fort Chambly in Canada, Lt. Col. Edward Antill of the 2nd Canadian Regiment reported to Brig. Gen. John Sullivan, commander of the Continental Army in Canada after the death of Maj. Gen. Thomas, that he had executed his orders to survey “the scattered situation of our men, for twenty miles in length” and found about 1500 men at Fort St. Johns and 1200 men at Fort Chambly but “few were fit for duty.” Antill recommended “prudent retreat” from Canada as the only viable option with the men sick and the British army advancing.
