On this day 250 years ago on Long Island in Charlestown Harbor, South Carolina, General Henry Clinton and 500 British soldiers landed to prepare to attack the American fort on Sullivan’s Island. Long Island and Sullivan’s Island were separated by a narrow inlet that Clinton understood could be waded at low tide.
