On this day 250 years ago on the Savannah River between Georgia and South Carolina the Royal Navy sloops HMS Raven and HMS Cherokee sent 3 boats up the Savannah River to capture an armed American schooner. Two other boats were assigned to guard Cockspur Island while they were conducting their attack. At the British sailors captured the schooner commanded by Capt. John Brown and its 8-man crew. When they returned to Cockspur Island the British captured 3 more Georgia militia as they were trying to escape up the river.
I have been unable to determine the fate of these 12 Americans captured by the British. The Royal Navy frequently impressed captured Americans and I do not know if any of these men ever returned home to Georgia. If anyone reading this blog can find what happened to these men, please let me know and I will update this blog.
