On this day 250 years ago, in Pamlico Sound, North Carolina 24 (or maybe 30 — sources differ) armed North Carolina seamen from the Ocracoke area in five whaleboats commanded by Benjamin Bonner of Pamplico River, captured the Lilly and recaptured the Polly which had been captured by the British only three days earlier. They also captured Loyalist John Goodrich, Jr., seven of his “Negro crew,” Capt. George Blair of the Ethiopian Regiment, and a soldier of the British 14th Regiment. The recaptured vessels were sent to New Bern and became part of the North Carolina Navy as tenders for the brigantines King Tammany and Pennsylvania Farmer.
