On this day 250 years ago in the Revolution — September 14, 1775

On this day 250 years ago in Philadelphia, the Second Continental Congress:

Resolved, That Samuel Stringer be appointed director of the Hospital, and chief Physician and Surgeon for the Army in the northern department with the power to appoint up to four surgeon mates.  That the deputy Commissary general purchase and forward such medicines as General Schuyler shall direct, for the use of said army.

and that

Eliphalet Dyer, Thomas Lynch, John Jay, John Adams, and Francis Lewis, selected to be a Committee to devise ways and means for supplying the continental army with Medicines.

Unfortunately, the medicine and medical practices of the era were inadequate. So despite the preparations of the Continental Congress, most of the deaths in the Continental Army in the Northern Department and elsewhere in America would be caused by disease rather than combat.

On this day 250 years ago in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Gen. George Washington wrote to Col. Benedict Arnold as he began his march into Canada:

While we are contending for our own liberty, we should be very cautious not to violate the rights of conscience in others, ever considering that God alone is the judge of the hearts of men, and to him only in this case they are answerable.
