On this day 250 years ago, the Continental Congress passed a resolution requesting “the Merchants and Others, in the several Colonies, not to send to Great Britain any Orders for Goods, and to direct the execution of all Orders already sent, to be delayed or suspended, until the sense of the Congress, on
the means to be taken for the preservation of the Liberties of America, is made public.”

Also on this day in Boston, Abigail Adams wrote to her husband John in Philadelphia:
I wish most sincerely there was not a slave in the province. It allways appeard a most iniquitious Scheme to me – fight ourselfs for what we are daily robbing and plundering from those who have as good a right to freedom as we have. You know my mind upon this Subject.
