On this day 250 years ago in the Revolution — January 8, 1776

On this day 250 years ago at 2:00 am in Perth Amboy, New Jersey, Lt. Col. William Winds commanding a detachment of New Jersey militia woke Royal Governor William Franklin from his bed to announce that the militia would be guarding the Governor’s mansion but that the Governor could not leave New Jersey without the permission of the Continental Congress.

On this day 250 years ago, Christophe Pélissier, a Frenchman living near Trois-Rivières, Canada, wrote to the Second Continental Congress with suggestions for how to capture Quebec. Pélissier operated the St. Maurice Ironworks and was producing ammunition, cannonballs, bombs and other munitions for the siege of Quebec.

On this day 250 years ago, Colonel James Frye III died as a result of an infection from his wounds at the battle of Bunker Hill.
