On this day 250 years ago in Philadelphia, Benjamin Franklin introduced in the Continental Congress a proposal for “Articles of Confederation and perpetual Union” for “the United Colonies of North America.” Franklin proposed that the United Colonies
enter into a firm League of Friendship with each other, binding on themselves and their Posterity, for their common Defence and Offence, against their Enemies for the Security of their Liberties and Propertys, the Safety of their Persons and Families, and their mutual and general Welfare.
The Continental Congress did not act on Franklin’s proposal, but it was widely distributed in the colonies. Some of his ideas would later be incorporated into the Articles of Confederation subsequently adopted by the Continental Congress after Independence as well as the Constitution
