On this day 250 years ago in New York City, Sons of Liberty led by Captain Marinus Willet captured the Turtle Bay Depot after sailing on a sloop through the Hell Gate from Greenwich, Connecticut.

And on this day all across America, the people were observing a “day of public humiliation, fasting and prayer” proclaimed by the Continental Congress:

that all America may soon behold a gracious interposition of Heaven, for the redress of her many grievances, the restoration of her invaded rights, a reconciliation with the parent state, on terms constitutional and honorable to both; And that her civil and religious priviledges may be secured to the latest posterity.
