On this day 250 years ago in Massachusetts, much of the New England Army of Observation under the command of General Artemas Ward marched from Cambridge to Charlestown directly across Back Bay from Boston. When the British did not respond, Ward led most of the army back to Cambridge but Brigadier General Israel Putnam led roughly 3,000 men on to Charlestown Heights, essentially daring the British to attack.  At the end of the day Putnam marched his men back to their original positions.
