On this day 250 years ago in the Revolution — September 26, 1774

On this day 250 years ago, the Lexington, Massachusetts Town Meeting voted to form committees “to bring two pieces of cannon from Watertown and mount them, to provide a pair of drums for the use of the military company in town . . . [and] to have the militia and alarm list meet for a view of their arms.”

Also on this day in Sandwich, Massachusetts, several hundred Patriots from Cape Cod assembled at the town liberty pole to block implementation of the Massachusetts Government Act by shutting down the Barnstable County court the next day. They elected Dr. Nathaniel Freeman as their leader and approved a code of conduct prohibiting drinking, profanity or violence by everyone participating in the planned action to block the court from convening. Freeman would go on to serve as a member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives and as a Brigadier General in the Massachusetts Militia during the Revolutionary War. Men from Barnstable County, presumably including many of the men who attended this meeting, would serve in the 13th and 14th Massachusetts Regiments of the Continental Army and in two regiments of the Barnstable Militia.
