On this day 250 years ago, the Massachusetts Gazette reported that £350 had been received from Alexandria, Virginia, while vessels filled with large quantities of flour and wheat had come from Virginia and Maryland, for the “noble cause” of the relief of Boston.
Also on this day John Adams recorded in his diary that the Massachusetts delegation had passed through Stratford, Connecticut on their wawssss:
About 10 We passed the Housatonnoc River, at Stratford . . . . We stoped at Curtis’s. The People here all say, Boston is suffering Persecution, that now is the Time for all the rest to be generous, and that Boston People must be supported.

It’s really hard to get a handle on this. Inflation and pounds to dollars gets in the way. However, some conversion tables lead me to believe that the £350 donated by Alexandria would be worth nearly $100,000 in today’s American dollars. That sounds like the people of Alexandria were definitely pledging their fortunes in American freedom.
