On this day 250 years ago in the Revolution — April 13, 1774

250 years ago in Williamsburg, Virginia, Clementina Rind, publisher of the Virginia Gazette, executed a Deed of Trust for her printing press and household items to secure a loan from the Mayor and three other prominent citizens of Williamsburg. This loan enabled Rind to continue publication of the Virginia Gazette as the favored publication for Patriots in Virginia and to become the official publisher for the Virginia House of Burgesses. Unfortunately, Clementina Rind would contract an illness and pass away before the end of the year. But her brief career showed that Patriot women, not just men, contributed to our nation’s Independence.

  1. There are times throughout history when women’s voices were loudly heard. I’m grateful for my own family (wife & 5 daughters) who have let their voices be heard. I’m especially proud of our cousin Maud McLure Kelly who was a suffragette and leader of women’s rights since she was the first woman to practice law in Alabama. I also love it that our own grandmother/great-grandmother, Oma Seay Vincent, and her cousin Maud voted together the first election following passage of the 19th Amendment. Wives and mothers can change the world as much as anyone.
